A type of German Barenfang, Barenjager honey liqueur is a delicious vodka-based liqueur that can be mixed smoothly into any number of Barenjager drinks or enjoyed straight from the bottle.

First brewed in Eastern Prussia during the 15th century, Barenjager became the first commercial brand of Barenfang. Produced by Teucke & Koenig Bear Trap Company (today known simply as Teucke & Koenig), the Barenjager honey liqueur bottle features an image of a fur trapper trapping a bear.

Barenjager liqueur is made from a few simple ingredients that, when properly combined, give this honey liqueur its unique flavor. Many Barenjager recipes are similar, but each homemade version will be different from batch to batch as ingredients, time, storage and numerous other variables will affect the flavor of the Barenjager.

How to Make Homemade Barenjager

If you'd like to try making your own batch of Barenjager at home, here's a good recipe to start with:

Barenjager Recipe

Ingredients
  • 8 cloves
  • ½ vanilla bean
  • 1 liter vodka (4 1/4 cups) – stronger alcohol may be used if desired
  • 350 grams (12.33 oz.) honey – fine/high quality
  • a container large enough to hold 1.4 liters (6 cups).
Directions

Making Barenjager liquor is a simple task, requiring mostly time before everyone can begin enjoying delicious homemade Barenjager drinks.
  1. First, rough chop the cloves and split the vanilla bean lengthwise before adding them to the container and filling it with the vodka.

  2. Let this mixture sit for at least 24 hours before straining the vanilla bean and the cloves from the vodka.

  3. Once the vodka is clear of any remaining pieces, stir vigorously, pouring the honey in a thin stream. Do not stop until the honey and the vodka are completely blended together. Store the finished Barenjager honey liqueur in a cool, dark area and enjoy.

Barenjager Drink Recipes

While Barenjager liqueur can be served at room temperature or chilled, in most cases, Barenjager drinks come in the form of smooth, enjoyable cocktails. In fact, the flavor of this liqueur is so sweet that some people even recommend it as a topping for desserts. With often humorous or comical names such as Killer Bee and Honey Dew-Me, Barenjager recipes hint at the fun a few rounds of drinks can unleash. Here are a few Barenjager recipes for you to try.
